Techno-Economic and Life Cycle Assessments of Bioenergy Systems and Biorefineries – methodology and case-studies

Tiago Lopes is a Researcher at the Bioenergy and Biorefineries Unit of the LNEG – Laboratório Nacional de Energia e Geologia. The LNEG is a R&D institute oriented to meet the needs of society and business in the field of energy (including bioenergy) and geology with a focus on sustainability, contributing to training, promotion, quality assessment, employability and access to infrastructures.

Mr. Lopes provided a lecture entitled “Techno-Economic and Life Cycle Assessments of Bioenergy Systems and Biorefineries – methodology and case-studies” in March 2021 to the Bioceb students. The main goal of this lecture was to give the students a view on how to apply the methodology and the importance to evaluate novel biobased processes. Mr. Lopes provided a brief description of Techno-Economic Assessment and Life Cycle Assessment methodologies. He then described the process simulation tools for the design of biorefineries and finally presented three case studies using microalgae and lignocellulosic-based biorefineries. The Bioceb students showed great interest in the topic, especially regarding the methodology and its applicability to other systems.

Natacha Giger-Janski, Industrial property engineer

Introduction to Intellectual property

Natacha Giger-Janski is a microentrepreneur and an industrial property engineer. She also has a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology. She is currently self-employed in the industrial property, a sector in which she has been working since 2012. From April 2019, she has been working as a consultant at Brevetarium, an independent firm she founded in 2019.

Ms. Giger-Janski provided a lecture entitled “Introduction to Intellectual property” in April 2021 to the Bioceb students at AgroParisTech. The students were initiated to key aspects of intellectual property such as patents, legal basis, patent documents, Espacenet database etc… The lecture gave rise to a question & answer session dedicated to the projects carried out by the Bioceb students such as the Green Line Projects. This introduction to intellectual property will thus be very useful for the students to develop their projects.

"It is never too early to understand the benefits of industrial property. I attach great importance to making students and (new) entrepreneurs aware of this subject. The idea is not to make them experts, but it is valuable for them to remember a few concepts. This way, when the time comes, they can look more closely at the issue, use the tools at their disposal, and avoid simple mistakes. François Pick, theatre teacher

François Pick is a French actor, theatre teacher and stage director. For many years, he has been organising and moderating workshops and formations in various structures such as schools and cultural centers for young people and professionals alike. As a training consultant since 1988, he also organises training workshops for companies, focusing on oral communication, public speaking or time and emotions management.

Theatre workshops based on verbal and non-verbal communication skills, August 27th 2020

François intervened during the Bioceb induction week in two online workshops with 10-15 students each. Based on verbal and non-verbal communication, the workshops contributed to breaking the ice between the foreign students, getting them to experience playful theatre group exercises (to which Bioceb coordinators also took part !). Here are some examples of exercises:
– Games of personal introduction to the group
– Relationship-based exercises using imaginary objects
– Voice and speech exercises
– Exercises for the expression of various emotions with and without verbalization

Second Theatre workshops' session, 20th November 2020

The Bioceb students also enjoyed the second theatre workshops' session organised online during the first Semester at Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne (URCA). Conducted by theatre teacher François Pick, the workshops focused on interactive theatre games and improvisations in order to improve students' expression of emotions, group cohesion, active listening and adaptability to different audiences (scientific experts, farmers, consumers etc…).

Francisco Gírio, National Laboratory of Energy and Geology

Lecture on the regulatory aspects of Biofuels in the EU and the world

Francisco Gírio intervened in December during the first semester at Université de Reims Champagne-Ardenne. Mr. Gírio is Head of Bioenergy & Biorefineries Unit and Principal Researcher on Biorefineries & Biofuels at the National Laboratory of Energy and Geology (LNEG) in Portugal. The LNEG is a R&D institute oriented to meet the needs of society and business in the field of energy (including bioenergy) and geology with a focus on sustainability, contributing to training, promotion, quality assessment, employability and access to infrastructures. The institute belongs to the Portuguese Ministry of Environment and Energy Transition. The LNEG is also one of the industrial and academic associated partners of the Bioceb programme.

Mr. Gírio provided a lecture on the regulatory aspects of Biofuels in the European Union and the world to the Bioceb students. During the first part of the lecture, Mr. Gírio presented the legal framework for biofuels at EU level and worldwide. He then focused on the main challenges and achievements of bioethanol biorefineries.
